Battleground
In this project I wanted to explore 4th wave feminism. Specifically the issues of ownership over ones body, and the sensitive topics of sexual assault and harassment women have been face with.
My aim was to create a product that would be a piece of political art, but could also serve as a functional uniform for feminists. I was prompted to explore this area due to the current political climate in feminism , as well the recent events of the Weinstein case. The exposure of and outrage sparked by Weinsteins crimes struck a nerve with me, as I along with many women have too experienced harassment of a similar nature in my life, and I wanted to respond to this through my work. My research began with feminist zines, articles written by women about their experiences with harassment, speeches by activists at the women's march, and also the artwork produced by women who have been victims of these crimes. I wanted the beginnings of this project to be as authentic and current as possible, so it was not until later that I started to look at the works of Frida Khalo, Barbra Kruger and Kathleen Hanna, for more visual reference. |
