Foundation Diploma Year
These images are taken of my Final Collection for my Art & Design Diploma (2016-17). The collection was provoked by my research into societies current 'design for landfill' mentality. In my research I looked into both the dark side of the Fast Fashion industry as well as the effects of plastic pollution to the environment.
The garments are each handmade using either household plastic or cotton waste. Even though the waste materials were mundane, I wanted to make the garments look beautiful so as to give the materials significance, and to make my audience have to look closely to decipher what the materials actually were. I also wanted to make a very literal statement about how our clothes are being designed not to last but to be thrown away after a few months, and how we view them as rubbish. I hoped the collection would make my audience consider more carefully what they throw away, or how they might be able to consume more sustainable in the future. |
This garment was made from damaged tarpaulin that would have otherwise been discarded, it is fastened together using zip ties. The accessory piece is made from scrap chicken wire broken plastic bags.
